This problem is characterised by the inability of the child to maintain attention as well as a pervasive type of impulsiveness, which allegedly at present, can be contributed to excessive motor activities. Hyperactivity lessens after puberty, although attention-deficit and impulsiveness may persist. It will appear that a diagnosis can be made by a doctor if the symptoms have prevailed for at least six months, but he would have discounted other probable causes first, e.g. auditory and vision problems, other medical conditions, learning disabilities, neurological and psychological problems.

TREATMENT

These children react with positive behaviour management very well. Special physical education classes may also help with co-ordination problems. This problem does not necessarily mean that the child will experience learning disabilities, but a learning problem may exist. Most children are being treated with a controversial substance, Ritalin, but this has to be monitored very carefully.

Distractions within his/her surroundings should be avoided and positive motivation is essential.
